Lake V refers to a portion of the Robinhood community in Rankin County, Mississippi.  Consisting of a 30 acre lake and the surrounding property, Lake V is owned by residents whose lots extend into the lake.  The remaining acreage not owned by individual residents is owned by Lake V Corporation.   Residents of Lake V have worked together showing strong community spirit to make  improvements to the Lake V dam as directed by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).  Contributions of labor and money from the Lake V community have enabled extensive clearing of woody vegetation and completion of required earthwork below the dam.  Contributions and expenses are noted in the table below.  Funds are maintained by Greg Nail.

Revisions to DEQ standards established the requirement for an engineering study of the dam to be completed by March 2006.  The study potentially includes three phases:  A Breach Analysis, an engineering survey, and development of an Emergency Action Plan.  It remains unclear whether Lake V will be required to complete all three phases.  As of  February 2006, DEQ had announced that only the Breach Analysis had to be completed initially.  The other phases would depend on the outcome of the Breach Analysis.  DEQ suspended its initial (March 31, 2006) deadline for completion of the Breach Analysis, only requiring that an engineering firm be identified to perform this task.  On March 12, 2006, Greg Nail contracted with Aqua Engineering Services in Jackson, MS, to perform the Breach Analysis.  DEQ was notified of this selection on March 24, 2006.  To view this letter, click here.

Contracted cost of the Breach Analysis was $2,500.  This work was completed by Aqua Engineering and a report was submitted by them to DEQ on January 23, 2008.  The most important finding of the Breach Analysis was the recommendation that Lake V's risk level be lowered from that of a "High Hazard" to a "Significant Hazard" dam.  To view the Breach Analysis report, click here.  To view the associated "Inundation Maps", click the following:  map1 and map2.  (Note:  map2 is very large, so it may take a couple of minutes to download.)

Lake V currently has a deficit balance of $1,171.56 as shown in the ledger which follows.  This deficit is partly from the breach analysis and partly from the maintenance done at the end of 2005.  Residents who have a personal investment in maintaining Lake V are being asked to contribute to resolving this deficit.  Janet Spears has volunteered to coordinate notification of residents and collection of contributions.  The remainder of the balance due for the Breach Analysis has been paid by Greg Nail in the form of a loan to Lake V, with expectation that this will be repaid by member contributions.

2008:  Thanks to all for the big turn-out over several weeks.  Extensive work has been completed to remove woody vegetation and completely clear the entire drainage spillway.

March 2009:  Thanks to Greg Nail and Freddie Spears for work in clearing silt from the culvert at the spillway.

February 6, 2010:  Thanks to all who turned out to help with cleanup on the dam.  Woody vegetation was cleared and the spillway was widened and cleared.

February 2011:  Routine maintenance of the dam and spillway to clear vegetation is under way.  All lake residents are invited to help out as you have time.  The goal is to clean woody vegetation from the dam and clean all vegetation from the spillway.
